In addition to preparing for the implementation of a remediation plan, Star has also made changes to the management team. Former chief executive officer Matt Bekier left the company in June, while interim CEO Geoff Hogg resigned on Monday. Star is now searching for a new CEO to replace Hogg.
Suspension
During the first week of October, Star Entertainment Group Ltd’s flagship casino in Sydney was suspended by the state’s Independent Casino Commission for breaching codes of conduct. In an unprecedented move, the Star was handed a record $100 million fine. This is the largest fine ever imposed on a casino, and is nearly $20 million more than the penalty assessed by the regulator in May to Crown Resorts in Victoria.
The NICC report cited money laundering, fraud, and other violations of the gambling laws in NSW. It also found links between the Star and organized crime.
The casino had attempted to circumvent Chinese capital flight laws, and also allowed cage operations in its casino. Most of the staff at the Star did not engage in criminal activity, but some did. The report found that the casino lied to banking institutions about payments. The Star also allowed a Macau-based junket operator to run a high-roller room in its casino.
